Structure vs control

I was talking with a good friend of mine today about how much we both like to have control in our day to day lives. I am a very organized person, and nothing brings me more joy than planning my schedule (in my green diary) and setting my goals (in my pink diary) for the coming week, every Sunday evening.

To some people this might sound excessive, and to be honest, maybe it is. But I’m currently juggling 7 different teaching positions, my coaching business and being a dog mumma (as well as the usual exercise and social life obligations).

Now I’m not saying this to brag. I’m busy, you’re busy, everyone is busy. And actually, we all have a different idea of what busy looks like for us personally, and what our optimal output is.

But we need to be mindful that structure is healthy and useful, but control can be potentially damaging, There is a fine line between being a control freak and becoming obsessive. If we cross that line then it is difficult for us to cope when things get in the way of our plans.

Plans change, they always do; that’s life! We need to ensure we are organized but also flexible, so we can take these bumps in the road in our stride.

Are you a control freak? Or do you need more organisation in your life?

Can you run from grief?

Can you run from grief?

The short answer is, no.

There is one thing for certain: We all inevitably die one day. And some of us are faced with the reality of death earlier than others. Each person experience numerous losses throughout their lives. The emotional response to that grief and the subsequent action taken are individual and very much influenced by where that person is in his/her life.

My father was first diagnosed with cancer in 2012 when I was 20 years old. It turned my entire world upside down. My family was in a state of shock trying to wrap our heads around the devastating news. Until that point, I always thought of cancer as something that affects other people, something that happens in other families. You know, heart-breaking stories on the news and the radio, not something you have to come to terms with.

My dad had throat cancer and had his voice box removed, which put him in remission fairly quickly. We actually thought it was over; the battle won. But 2 years later, it came back with a vengeance. In the words of John Green from A Fault in Our Stars: He “lit up like a Christmas tree.” After suffering a seizure at work, my dad was taken to hospital where tests showed that the cancer had spread to his brain and both lungs. The prognosis wasn’t good. We spent months in and out of hospitals, sitting with him while he had chemo and trying to make the time he had left as comfortable as possible.

On 10 February 2016 my dad took his last breath, at home, in a quiet village in the South West of England. It took me a few hours of shock before it sank in and I started to cry; then the crying wouldn’t stop. I resorted to alcohol to numb the pain. For anyone who has lost a parent you will understand the feeling. It’s like half of you has died. I wasn’t very close to my dad, due to him being an alcoholic, but I had a happy childhood and fond memories growing up.

I don’t know what first sparked the impulse. All I wanted to do was run – physically run from my grief, as far away from my hometown as possible. So that’s what I did. At this point I was 23, and I hadn’t left England since I was 13. I took a number of short trips to Spain and within the UK before venturing further afield to India the following year.

I enrolled in an Ancient and Holistic Psychology programme in Bangalore and Mysore. I was working in the mental health sector as a support worker and studying for my Psychology degree with the Open University. I had recently started yoga and this felt like something I wanted to explore further.

I still have vivid memories of that trip and the wonder and awe I felt while exploring the south of India. Everything was so strange, the food was so spicy, the people so inquisitive, the poverty so blatant and in some parts, the caste system so obvious. When I visited the Mysore Palace I cried. Not only because of its beauty but also because I saw an elephant being beaten. At that time, I was suffering from severe anxiety, something that has been present all my life. My dad’s illness and death exacerbated the anxiety. To top it off, I was having an identity crisis, and I didn’t know who I was or what the point of my life was.

Going to India was a turning point. It was like I had been living with my eyes closed and finally they were starting to open. Seeing people who live their lives in such a drastically different way than my life in the UK, truly broadened my mind, increased my awareness of and gratitude for life.

I had a conversation with a girl from London on the placement whose name I unfortunately cannot remember. She had recently converted to Islam. That’s when my interest in the psychology of religion piqued. I wasn’t brought up with religious beliefs as such, so I was intrigued to find out what makes someone choose to be religious. She told me people need something bigger to believe in, to help them wrap their head around things such as grief and poverty. Suddenly the penny dropped and it all made sense to me. The reason I was so depressed about my dad dying was because of my Western belief system, that when someone dies that’s it; they are gone. What if there was something more?

Fast forward to present day. I’m writing this in a coffee shop in Hanoi, overlooking the beautiful Westlake on a warm autumn day. In February 2021 it will be five years since my dad passed away. In those five years I have travelled to eight countries, I volunteered in Sri Lanka for four months helping people with mental illness and nearly one year ago I quit my corporate job to move to Vietnam.

I can honestly say that losing my dad has helped me to develop and understand myself in so many ways. My dad loved to travel so I know he would be proud of me. Of course I miss him, and I wish cancer hadn’t taken him so soon. But everything in life happens for a reason. And in my grief, I managed to find my passion in life, for travelling and for helping people.

1hour clarity coaching call

Hello, I’m really sorry I didn’t reply sooner. I am fairly new to this platform and I only just saw your comment.

Coaching is a practice whereby I would help you to set and achieve goals. You can set these goals in any area of your life. The main thing about coaching is that it is you who will do the work to get from where you are to where you want to be. I will help to make things more clear for you in terms of what you want in life. If you would like to discuss on a free call, please email me soulc&…

Thanks and have a great day

Anna Ginger3y

Shamanic Space Clearing

How it works: I use Shamanic Journeying tools to connect with the space and with my guide and helpers. I then remote view the house clairvoyantly and intuitively so that I can remove and transmute energies from my clients’ living or work spaces to restore energy, harmony, peace, flow, and promote growth in their home and their lives.

Once this work is completed, clients often report feeling more grounded, relaxed, energised, and that they feel more harmonious energies in the home.

Working with clients remotely, I open sacred space and commune with the House, the Land Energy, and with Spirit to intuit what is needed. I ask for information and guidance for you in relation to your space. Then I rattle and sage the home, office, or building within sacred space remotely holding the vision of the space in my mind while I shamanically journey - meaning, I go into a mild trance state - to the Spirit world or ‘non-physical reality.’

I will conduct healing and clearing of the space, for removal of that which is not serving the highest good. I usually visualise each energy that is removed, enabling me to write a report about the experience.

This is a remote healing for any location. You receive a written report.

Emotion Code for Anxiety Relief

🌙. Receive a 60 minute Emotion Code session for anxiety relief. This session will feel like you’ve gifted yourself with a bouquet of beautiful 🌺 flowers. You may have a feeling you can’t quite put your finger on that something is getting in the way of your success, your goals, and your dreams.

🌙. I want to help hold a safe space for you to go deep into your truth and your shadow to uncover what it is. This emotional clearing session is like shining a flashlight on your stuck emotions causing negative patterns, self sabotage, or fear of success. As we shine a light we create movement so we can let go of what we don’t want.

🌙. If we don’t process our old emotional wounds, when life throws curves at us, it is like having a wound on our body and throwing salt in it. It stings. Instead of ignoring that comment someone made, it brings us back to the time of the wound in the past even if we don’t realize it. Subconscious emotions are stored in our body and brain where they can bubble to the surface.

🌙. We will identify exactly what stuck emotions are getting in the way of you feeling calm and relaxed using the Emotion Code framework and clear those. We will also do a short guided exercise/meditation where I will send reiki to both your nervous system and any past events that need healing as well.

🌙. You are precious; treat yourself accordingly. You are worth taking the time to treat yourself to self-care. What can you take off your plate to make room for taking care of yourself and remembering your magic?

🌙. Our bodies are 55% water and we need plenty of pure, filtered water every day so please hydrate well before and during your session.

🌙. I will share what came up, what shifted, and how to do easy self care to keep your energy and emotions flowing and clear.

Feel free to reach out with any questions. Love, Sara
