Horse Therapy for Kids

Reading time 2 min.

As you may well know, children are especially prone in their youth. They change so quickly, and they can be influenced so easily. It’s a tender time, and it’s a time when support and empathy are such positive influences. It’s an especially crucial time for children overcoming obstacles at such an early stage in their lives. Fortunately, hippotherapy provides an opportunity to overcome these obstacles. Let’s take a look at why equine therapy may just be the ideal form of therapy for your kiddo:

Children Love Animals Children Love Animals

Most obviously, yet nonetheless important, children love animals. That’s why they hug the family dog. That’s why they have stuffed animals stacked on their beds. And that’s why they bond so quickly with horses. When you choose to include equine therapy in your child’s life, you’re ensuring that they spend time with a favorite friend. It’s likely that equine therapy time will become your child’s favorite activity!

Horses Aid Mental & Physical Health

Horses aid both mental and physical health in children and adults alike. Since the 1970s, equine therapy has been accepted as an useful treatment for a variety of conditions. Most often, here at My Heroes Therapy, we provide physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, and we often work with children who have cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, autism-spectrum patients, developmental delay, and TBI. Petting a horse can help to coax a child to communicate, just as horseback riding may help a child to overcome a back problem.

Relationships Are Mutual

Horses build trusting relationships with humans, which can be critical for children who are developing and growing. In an article entitled, Horse Therapy for Kids, the author enlightens us about the importance of a trusting relationship between a horse and a human:

“What horses care about is being treated with kindness. They instantly react to aggression, fear, and anger. Clients learn fairly quickly that horses will retreat unless riders learn to control those emotions.”

In the arena, children learn to be respectful and they learn that they must earn trust from a horse so that they can pet and ride their furry friend. These lessons extend outside of the arena too. Children learn to build trusting relationships with others, just as they have with our horses. If you have who struggles to find friends or communicate with others, equine therapy can be a natural transition to be more outgoing.
