Myth of glamorous tech mogul

Sep 9, 2021

Workplace trends are continuously changing, and those changes can be hard to keep up with. We live in a glamorous high-speed world, where digital interconnection, sophisticated technology and social media purportedly make one smarter, faster and more effective.
“When I hired Rajendren, he was an exceptional employee and developer. He was trustworthy , very spontaneous and dependable, an effective communicator, and had great ideas and plans.”- Alok (HR)
But conversely, the challenge now is when you have the ability to work from wherever you want, an individual is carrying his work 24*7 which makes him harder to separate himself from his work. Persistent chronic stress, anxiety could hit the bottom line called “burnout”.
“But lately, I've noticed that he has become irritable with his coworkers. He always seems to lack the energy to get the software project done and often takes a day off. Delays his work. Could that be burn out?”- Alok (HR)
The global economic burden of burnout has not been calculated, but it is estimated that the global cost of mental illness will grow to $16 trillion by 2030, in part, owing to the increase in burnout. In a recent update, one leading platform gave its full-time employees a week off to prevent burnout, a week to recharge. But is one week enough for settling a psychological syndrome emerged as a prolonged response to chronic interpersonal stressors on the job? To settle increased stress, burnout causes overwhelming exhaustion, feelings of cynicism and detachment from the job, and a sense of ineffectiveness and lack of accomplishment? Burn out takes 2-5 years to recovery.
The effect of the pandemic is having a significant impact on mental health aswell. A December study of 1,136 employed U.S. adults found that a staggering 76% of employees were experiencing worker burnout—which researchers say include such symptoms as exhaustion, feeling negative, cynical or detached from work, and reduced work performance.
“I had to seek a help. this wasn’t me. I loved working, but now I am turning out to be a different person all together. This is not me. I did visit to a mental health professional. He said cautions! Signs look like you are going through a burn out! – says Rajendren

As the work-life balance get blurred globally in the pandemic times, India came out top with over 41 per cent of workers citing the lack of separation between work and personal life negatively impacting their wellbeing, resulting in increased stress levels, a Microsoft study revealed on Wednesday. Gallup defines, "The employee experience is the journey an employee takes with your organization. It includes all the interactions an employee has with your organization before, during and after their tenure."
“I think it’s important to note that this is not an issue that will be solved with a single initiative. To prioritize mental health means to support employees for the long-term with a wellness team and continue to adopt benefits, initiatives that reflect their needs.” – says Alok (HR).
