A Bad Mood Tool Box

We’re all intimately familiar with what it’s like to be in a bad mood. Sometimes there is a reason for it, other times you simply wake up on the wrong side of the bed. There are times bad moods need to be felt. Where we need to take a day to take it easy or process the reasoning behind our mood. But there are other times you can recognize you’re in a bad mood and that you don’t want to be in it but you can’t get out of it. The bad mood becomes a dense fog you want to navigate out of, but every turn is met with fog.
Just as pilots plot their routes before take-off and have GPS to help them navigate if the weather turns, you too can plot a way out of your bad mood before it happens. Create a bad mood tool box that contains a list of things you can run through to help you navigate your way out of the bad mood cloud and back to enjoying life. This bad mood tool box will be your guide back to inner peace.
What you add to your tool box is up to you. It takes trial and error to see what will work. When you find something you enjoy, something that elevates you, add it to your bad mood list. This way, when you’re in the midst of the bad mood cloud you don’t have to spend the energy thinking through what will help you. You can simply run through your pre-created list. If you have negative coping strategies, you can place the list somewhere near those things so when you’re tempted to turn to them, you have other options. Here are some tools that many of my clients have found to be helpful:

  1. A walk. Take a walk out in nature. Notice the weather, the plants, the animals you see as you walk. Put your phone away and breathe the fresh air. Nature is healing
  2. Ground Yourself. Put your bare feet on the ground. Feel the grass, the snow, the rain, or the warmth under your feet. Become reconnected with the earth.
  3. A podcast. Listen to a podcast. It can be an inspirational one or simply one you find interesting. Immerse yourself in what is being talked about. This break from your own thoughts can be just want you need to help elevate you out of the bad mood. Some of my favorite podcasts are the Skinny Confidential His & Her podcast, Glennon Doyle’s podcast: We Can Do Hard Things, Gabby Bernstein’s podcast: Dear Gabby, and the Rachel Hollis podcast.
  4. A videogame. Play your favorite video game! This is another great tool that can give you a break from your thoughts. This break can be just what you need to regroup and break the bad mood.
  5. Change of scenery: Changing your scenery or your daily routine can help you switch your perspective. Removing yourself from your day to day routine helps you realize that there are bigger things at work and the universe doesn’t center around you and your problems. Reaffirming that life goes on and the world keeps spinning, even when it all seems to be crumbing down, can be comforting when it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders.
  6. Create a good things photo album: Create a photo album in your phone with all the things you encounter that bring you joy. When a bad moods arises pull it out and look at all the things in your life that you love.
  7. Hydrate. When everything seems complicated, impossible, and horrible, ask yourself how much water you’ve had that day. Sometimes it just as simple as you’re not able to deal with the hard thing’s life is throwing at your because the only thing you’ve had to drink all day is iced coffee. Water is key, it might not be that simple but sometimes it is that simple.
  8. Nutrition: When was the last time you had a fruit, vegetable, and protein? It’s unfair to ask our bodies and minds to perform at 100% when we aren’t feeding them the nutrients they need to thrive. When you feed your body a wide variety of nutrient dense foods it will have the fuel it needs to perform at its best. Your body will let you know when it isn’t getting what it needs, sometimes that manifests in a bad mood.
  9. Meditation. Meditation is great for so many things. It reconnects you with yourself, your true self without all the outside noise. It’s also a practice of taking control of your thoughts. Having control over your thoughts is game changing.
  10. Gratitude practice. Where you place your focus is the reality you create. If you are focusing on everything going wrong, your reality is that everything is wrong. If you place your focus on the things going right, your reality is everything going right. By consistently engaging in a gratitude practice you can train your brains baseline, it’s default focus, to be focused on the positives. This is a game changer for increasing your satisfaction and enjoyment with life.

You may get to the bottom of your list and find your still in the bad mood cloud. If nothing works-do nothing. Sometimes the only thing you can do is hunker down and wait for the fog to lift. When this happens, the best thing you can do is nothing. Sleep it off, and find comfort in the fact that nothing lasts forever, the storm will lift and you can make it through. Brene Brown is an American Researcher who studies human emotions. In her talks, she speaks of overwhelm. Bad moods can sometimes build to the level of becoming overwhelming. When it seems like nothing is going right, you cannot communicate with others or yourself the way you usually would, or if tasks that are usually doable become unmanageable, it’s a sign your bad mood is transforming into overwhelm. Overwhelm transcends the feelings of being stressed or annoyed. Overwhelm means you cannot process the events in your life at the speed they are happening. Your internal systems are overloaded. When this happens, Brown confirms the best thing to do is nothing. Don’t drive, don’t make important decisions, don’t work, don’t cook dinner, or clean. Do nothing. Your nervous system needs time to calm down. When in an overwhelming bad mood, the best thing to do is hunker down, breath, and wait for the clouds to pass. You have got this.

The Gap Between Knowing Better and Doing Better

There is a period, the time of which is different for everyone, where a gap exists between knowing better and doing better. It is when you have taken the step of becoming self-aware of what habits are no longer serving you, or are hindering you from enjoying your life, however you find yourself continuing to fall into the same unhealthy patterns nonetheless.

This gap between knowing better but failing to do better is in part due to our homeostatic impulse. The homeostatic impulse regulates physiological functions from breathing to body temperature. When you try to push yourself out of the familiar patterns you’ve grown accustom to, you face resistance from your mind and body. The mind likes the familiar, even if it makes you miserable. This impulse helped keep our ancestors alive, but today it helps to keep us stuck.

You make active choices during only a small percent of our day, letting your subconscious run the show the rest of the time. When experiencing times of distress, it is even harder for us to make conscious choices, our brains turn to autopilot. We fall back on the things we’ve done in the past, which were often easy but unsustainable short term fixes, instead of consciously choosing habits that leave us feeling good in the long term.

When this gap between knowing better and doing better arises, you may fall into negativity. Often judging and shaming yourself for failing to choose the healthier option. Don’t judge yourself if you fall back into unhealthy coping mechanisms. Judgement and shame are never the answer.

Our tendency to fall back into what’s familiar, even if it’s not what’s best for us is why it’s imperative to make healthy coping habits part of your daily routine. Don’t solely keep healthy habits in your back pocket for when life gets hard. Practice them and strengthen them. This will reinforce the positive consequences of their use. The more practice you have, the more familiar these habits will become. The more familiar the healthy habit, especially when times get rough, the more likely you will turn to it instead of a destructive habit.

It's important to keep in mind that what “healthy” means is different for everyone. For some people working out is a great stress reliever, others excessively exercise and use it to distract themselves from their emotions. For some people turning to food for comfort causes addictive behavior, for others a couple cookies helps improve their day.

Living a balanced life is a goal many of us are after but there is no one size fits all approach. Determining what works best for you takes time, work, and honesty. What actually leaves you feeling your best? What helps you cope with stressors? What leaves you feeling great about yourself?

9 Ways to Stay Present

Being present means being fully invested in the present moment. I understand defining a word with the same word isn’t entirely useful. Some examples might help. Presence means you’re not thinking about the time you choked up during your middle school play nor are you thinking about the workout you want to get in before the day ends. When you’re present, the only thing you’re concerned with is what you are doing in the current moment. As a result, presence allows you to fully experience your life, to be in the here and the now. I want to be more present because I want to savor every moment and experience this world has to offer me. If you want that as well, here are 9 ways you can be more present:

  1. Smell. Focus on the smells around you. If you’re hiking smell the trees. If you’re at a friends for dinner think about how good the BBQ smells. If you’re studying, light a candle. Taking the time to notice and appreciate the smells around you. It brings you into the present moment.
  2. Exercise. If you find yourself feeling cloudy or spacy then work up a sweat. It brings your mind into your body and allows you to focus on the here and the now.
  3. Water. Run cold water on your wrists, drink a glass of water, or take a shower. Focus on the sensation of the water. It brings you out of your head and into your physical world. You know that feeling when you jump in the ocean? It’s one of the most present sensations. Not everyone, including me, is able to jump in the ocean whenever they want but you should try it if you have an opportunity. It’s an amazing feeling.
  4. Breathwork. Deep full breaths will center you. 3 seconds in, three seconds out will focus you.
  5. Get outside. If you find yourself ruminating or feeling anxious, get outside. Watch the trees sway in the wind, listen to the bird’s chirp, feel the sun. When you notice that life is continuing despite what you are thinking about, it helps you reconnect to the now.
  6. Be sober. Drinking and smoking doesn’t allow you to be fully present in the moment. If presence is what you’re looking for, take a break from the stuff that alters your mind.
  7. Change scenery. Sometimes we get into a routine or a rut. We always go to the same restaurant, see the same people, walk our dogs down the same streets. Switch things up, it’s a great way get into the present moment.
  8. Put the phone away. Don’t even check it. If you’re doing something you want to be fully present for, your phone is going to do everything it can to bring you out of that moment and into a million other moments happening in the techno-universe.
  9. Meditation or yoga. practices like this help us focus our attention in the present moment. They help us restructure our brains and creating new neural pathways. When new neural pathways are formed, we are able to restructure our default patterns and live more actively in a conscious state instead of a reactive state. Practices like meditation and yoga disrupt our auto pilot driven state and make it easier for us to make conscious choices instead.

It Doesn't Matter How it Looks, It Matters How it Feels

It doesn’t matter how it looks; it matters how it feels.

Spend your energy on it feeling good instead of looking good. That shift changes everything. Are you satisfied with your actions? Are you fulfilling your purpose? Do you know what your purpose is? Do you wake up most mornings looking forward to the day ahead? Are you working towards your goals? Do you feel like you’re making progress in your life? Can you sit alone with yourself and feel peace? If your answer to any of these questions is no, coaching is a great place to start.

This ideology can be applied to any facet of life. The feeling you get when you walk into your home is more important than how it looks to others. How your relationships feel are more important than how they look. How you feel in your work is more important than how it looks to others.

The vibes don’t lie, you only have to learn to trust them. Trust your inner voice and go where love flows. Put your energy into the things and the people that leave you feeling good. The more you do that, the more aligned your life will be. The more aligned your life is with who you are and what you value, the happier you will be.

Your Obstacles

One of my favorite quotes, written by Elizabeth Gilbert, is “[T]he women whom I love and admire for their strength and grace did not get that way because shit worked out. They got that way because shit went wrong, and they handled it. They handled it in a thousand different ways on a thousand different days, but they handled it. Those women are my superheroes.”
This quote encompasses some facts of life that I fear many have forgotten or maybe even never believed to be true. Social media helps promote the fallacy that individuals become successful, whatever success means for you, by things effortlessly working out. The highlight reels we consume daily of other people’s lives propagate the idea that others rose to the top due to luck. That the people who seemingly “have it all” have it because things merely worked out. What we fail to discuss is the hard work, the tears, the regressions, the failures, the heartbreaks, doubts, confusion, and “no’s” that came before things “effortlessly worked out.”
While it is true that we’re all born into this world with different privileges, that we all start from different places, and have different advantages and disadvantages along the way, I can confidently tell you that the diamonds of our species did not become shiny from sitting around while others polished them.
The, in my opinion, best people; the ones who are admirable and worth learning from are the ones who have been through the hardest things life could throw at them and made it to the other side. They’re the people who have repeatedly been told no but kept going anyway. They’re the people that started from the bottom and fought their way to the top. They’re the people who lost it all but somehow got it back. They’re the people that jumped when they couldn’t see where they’d land.
Through continually putting themselves through the hard stuff and/or having the hard stuff imposed on them and nevertheless coming out the other side, these warriors became sure of their ability to figure it out.
Like a muscle, the tearing and repairing makes you stronger. You’re better equipped to deal with crisis should it arise. You become more comfortable with discomfort. Your threshold runs deeper. In the bending and breaking you learn things about yourself and the universe that you would never learn if things were constantly comfortable.
Your obstacles build a confidence and assurance in yourself. They are opportunities to learn, grow, and experience more. To get to know yourself and this world more intimately. While in the moment we may wish we did not have to go through the hard stuff, the hard stuff is what makes us strong. It doesn’t mean you won’t falter, but it does mean that when it comes down to it-when it matters, your inner strength will be there. Because after everything you’ve been through you know two things: 1. Only you can decide what breaks you and 2. You may fall, you may stay down for a little and you’ll always get up.
Stop running from your obstacles. Accept them for what they are and become familiar with your inner strength and the fact that no matter what, you can handle it.

Alyssa Kelliher
The Negatives

All feelings are ok and valid but they do not have to rule you, they can pass through you. Negative emotions serve a purpose, it’s our mind’s way of trying to keep us safe. They can show us when we need to make a change, when we are uncomfortable with something, that our boundaries have been crossed. However, there are also times when our minds become overbearing and even irrational. They prevent us from enjoying what is happening right in front of us.
When this happens, acknowledge the negative emotions-say them out loud and give them recognition. Thank them for trying to protect you and assure them that you are capable of protecting yourself. Acknowledge that you’ve got it from here, that you are safe and that you are protected. And then release the negativity. Learn to trust in yourself. Believe that you can handle what comes when and if it comes. But don’t let the ifs prevent you from embracing the now.
It’s important to recognize that negative emotions are not the same as negative self-talk. Negative self-talk is not the same as your mind telling you a certain person makes you feel uneasy or you’re uncomfortable in a certain situation. As you get to know yourself more, you’ll be able to better differentiate between situations where your learned beliefs are bullying you and situations where your true self is trying to tell you a situation is not for you.
Begin a practice of letting the negative thoughts drift back to where they came from, nowhere.

Alyssa Kelliher
Happiness

We are unintentionally conditioned from when we are young to believe that our happiness is dependent upon our accomplishments. When we got As on our tests, we were told we were worthy; when we scored a goal in soccer we were applauded; when we did our hair well or wore a nice outfit, we received attention. There is nothing wrong with doing well, achieving our goals and feeling pride in doing so. However, it’s not sustainable to always be doing our best. We are not always going to be achieving something others deem worthy of applause. We have to learn to clap for ourselves.

Somewhere along the way, our brains translated the extrinsic validation we received after “doing well” to mean we were happy. Don’t get me wrong, sometimes we were happy. And there is nothing wrong with validation, relationships are based on validation and growth. Sometimes we worked hard for the right reasons and achieving our goals made us genuinely satisfied. But other times, we chased external validation and praise to fulfil us, to tell us we were whole, to prove to others and ourselves we were doing alright.

What I began to realize as I got older is external happiness, happiness based on things going well for me, is fleeting. We reach one goal and we’re artificially happy for a while. Living off the high of other’s praise we’re able to convince ourselves that we’re on the right track. But like all highs, it's temporary. It’s only a matter of time before we’re stuck in our own heads wondering why we still feel unfulfilled. We assume it’s because we did something wrong, or something is wrong with us. We think we haven’t accomplished enough; we aren’t worthy of lasting happiness yet; we have to work harder. We tell ourselves lies like: when I make six figures, that’s when I’ll be happy, when I have a baby that’s when it’ll all come together, when I find the perfect partner, when I fit into those jeans, that’ll be the moment I’ll surely be content. And then we’re off pursuing the next goal. The one that will most definitely bring us peace. As we grow into adults these goals transition from getting As in math to having nice kitchens and getting an office with a window or having kids who get As and score soccer goals.
Here’s the thing, chasing validation outside of yourself will never make you truly happy. Happiness based on other people, conditions or things is unreliable, it can always be taken away. What matters are the things inside of you. The things that will be with you always. The love you have for yourself. The inspired actions that make you, you.

We have to learn to be content even when we aren’t moving mountains. To be happy when the most we did all day was get out of bed. This is tricky, balance is key. After two months of doing nothing but watching Netflix and chilling, we likely aren’t going to be feeling our best. Balance is difficult to learn, but is important to living an authentically happy life. To complicate matters further, what is a good balance for someone else may not be good for you. Life is about trial and error, constantly tweaking variables so you can feel your best. Being willing to recognize when something that served you in the past is no longer serving you.
When you start basing your happiness on you, when you start listening to the voice deep in your gut, you’ll start chasing the things that truly set your heart on fire. Things that make your face light up.

At first, it’s hard to know what your individual soul really wants from what you’ve been conditioned all your life to value. True happiness doesn’t demand anything from you. You are content with just that moment, you aren’t looking for another moment to chase. Happiness is different for everyone; I don’t have a step by step guide for what will make you truly feel happy. Write a list of the times you have felt genuinely happy in your life. This list will remind you that your happiness never came from things looking seemingly perfect on the outside. Your happiness came from being present and open and connected to yourself and to the moment. Let that be a guide as you move forward.

What I can tell you is that the more you love yourself, the more moments you’ll experience that will make you feel truly alive. Truly present in your life. Those are the moments that you’ll carry with you forever. That is your happiness.

Sink Into the Good

When you feel content and satisfied, ground yourself in that feeling. If you’re used to chaos instead of enjoying the good times it can be tempting to focus on if or when things may go wrong. Worrying about all the ways your peace can be disturbed won’t better prepare you to deal if it is. Anxiously anticipating will merely take away from the joyful moment’s life offers us. Those joyful moments are what make up a good life. Don’t skip though the good to prepare for what’s next, resist that urge. Sink into the good. If you are content, let life simply be good.
Journal about the good, write daily lists of all that you’re thankful for. Pause to notice the simple delightful things around you. Lean into the positive energy. By doing this you’ll attract more of the good stuff instead of abruptly ending it.

Alyssa Kelliher
A mind blowing singular breakthrough is not what changes your life. A micro shift is.

A mind blowing singular breakthrough is not what changes your life. A micro shift is.

Small continuous actions are what lead to monumental changes. Consistent actions towards your goals are what lead to sustainable and long term change. Although, we would all like to have a huge “ah-ha” moment where everything clicks into place, this is rarely what happens.
The moments where we feel like things are clicking are created by the 1,000 small moments that came before it. The big moments are created by the times we took tiny steps towards our goals, when we felt stuck but kept going.

The instances you chose to add a vegetable to one meal had to come before you could regularly eat a balanced diet. The hundreds of time you wrote a paper and scored below average had to come before you could get an A. Running for 5 minutes had to come before you could finish a marathon. Paying $20.00 towards your loans had to come before you became debt free.
We often discredit these “small” steps in the right direction. We want the big moments where it seems like everything serendipitously came together. The graduation, the wedding, paying off your debt, working out regularly. But those huge moments are the results of thousands of small choices made day after day, year after year. It’s the small moves in a general direction continuously repeated despite setbacks, mistakes, and failures that matter.

Next time you feel discouraged remember it’s the small things that change your life. It doesn’t have to be perfect; you only have to keep getting up and keep moving forward.

Have trouble focusing? Look at what you're consuming

We’re heading into the new year! This is a time when we become inspired to create new habits and go after new (or old) goals. It’s a fresh start, a blank slate.

Although the newfound inspiration that comes with the new year is great, it will eventually wane. Most people stop working towards new year goals within the first 21 days of setting them. Setting goals and having dreams is important. They are what keep us evolving and prevent us from feeling stuck. However, we can’t simply wish our dreams into existence. We have to identify what we want and then follow through and do the work to reach them. To continue on when inspiration is fleeting, dedication and focus must take over.

To commit to your goals; you have to consistently work on them. If you find yourself having a hard time staying on track and focused then take an audit of the things you’re consuming.

Whenever I find myself in a lull, or like I’m “stuck”, I take inventory of the things I’m consuming. I can usually pinpoint where my energy is being used where I’d prefer it to go towards other things.

Energy and focus are finite resources. At some point during the day, they’re going to run out. When we want to evolve, it’s important we use our energy and our ability to focus to create things we want to and not let it dwindle away.

If you have goals but find yourself struggling to execute, sit down and take an honest look at what you’re consuming. This includes social media, television, people, text messages, family members, gossip, the news. All of it. Where are you putting your energy? Are these things inspiring you? Do you leave interactions with people feeling energized or are you left feeling drained and exhausted? Do you go on tik tok for a 5 minute work break and then 45 minutes later find yourself crying over a video of a dog that passed away? (I may or may not be speaking from personal experience.) When you scroll on social media are you inundated by the next catastrophe or do you find tips on how to be more productive? Are you watching House Wives of New Jersey or are you meditating? I’m not saying one is better than the other. What I am saying is what you consume either fuels your energy or sucks it from you. Be discerning. Take note of what leaves you feeling good and like you can conquer what you have set out for yourself. Do more of those things. Don’t go on social media until your work for the day is done. Replace the news playing in the background with uplifting music. The hundreds of different pulls for our attention through the day takes energy and focus from us. It adds up. Be intentional about what you consume and make sure it isn’t preventing you from getting where you want to be. Curate your environment to set you up for success, it makes a huge difference.

How to Set Boundaries in 5 Easy Steps

Boundaries are essential for authentic and genuine connection with both yourself and others. During the busy holidays don’t forget to continue to hold space around what leaves you feeling your best. This will enable you to show up for both yourself and others!

  1. Know Your Why: Your why is your truth. It’s the reason you are implementing changes in the first place. Identify your why before setting your boundary. Your why can be anything as long as it is authentic to you. It may be so you have genuine connection with others, so you feel free to be yourself, so you feel free to say no, or so you feel safe to be yourself.
When others express discomfort with your decision, it’s easy to forget your boundaries are to keep you feeling and running your best. If you are met with resistance from people around you remember this. Your boundaries are not to hurt anyone. It can be easy to fall back into old habits and please others when your boundaries are questioned. It’s okay to consider others’ concerns but don’t let it trump your truth. This is when it is important to remember your why. Write it down on a piece of paper or save it on your phone so that when you feel like you’re going to let your boundaries slip, you can be reminded of why you implemented them in the first place. Remember you’re doing it for you, so you feel your best and can fully show up in your life. You’re not doing it to inconvenience or hurt anyone else. True relationships that are genuinely for you, will be better because of it. Let your truth be your light house through the discomfort of growth.

  2. Clear Communication: Communicate your boundaries clearly to others. Communicate when both you and the other parties’ emotions are not heightened. Speak slowly and in a low tone. Avoid blaming the other party or using “you” statements. Putting blame on others and statements using the word “you” tend to make people defensive. Speak in terms of yourself. Use “I” statements. Communicate how you feel and what you need to do for yourself.

  3. Get clear on what you can and cannot be flexible in. Just because you set a boundary does not mean that things will never change. Both circumstances and people are constantly changing. What once was, may no longer be. Determining what you can and cannot be flexible with may take trial and error. There may be some areas where you can be flexible and work with others and there will be some areas where you cannot. Both are valid. Notice what leaves you feeling your best.

  4. Stick to it. Especially at first, it’s going to be hard to stick to your boundaries. New things almost always cause discomfort. You may feel guilty and want to fall into old habits. But remember, the way things were was not serving you, that’s why you’re setting boundaries in the first place. Make yourself stick it out for at least 48 hours. Usually after that time period the guilt and uncertainty of doing something new will have subsided and you’ll be feeling significantly better. It’s a great idea to bring awareness to how you’re feeling during that 48 hour period. Journaling your thoughts and feelings is a great way to become aware of your feelings.

  5. Evaluate and make changes based on how you feel. After a few weeks of living with these new boundaries, take stock of how you feel. See what, if anything, has to be tweaked and how you are feeling about the changes you’re making. Remember the goal is to make you, and as a result your relationships, feel their best!

3 things to do when you’re stuck in a bad mood:

3 things to do when you’re stuck in a bad mood:

  1. Burn sage. It smells good and the action of smudging it around yourself and your living space makes you feel like you’re doing something. Feeling like you’re doing something makes you feel better. Sage has been used far longer than conventional medicine to dispel negative energy from people and places. Keep a bundle of dried sage on hand for when a bad mood strikes.

  2. Take a walk. I’m all for a bum day or couple of days when you’re feeling bad. But after a few days, bumming it is going to do nothing to increase your mood. Get outside. It’s okay if you don’t want to rush into an intensive exercise routine, but do something to get your body moving and get out of the house.

  3. Reach out. Recognize when you need help. If you’re still feeling stuck in a rut after a few days, phone a friend, family member, coach, or therapist. Talking through issues is extremely helpful. It’s especially nice to speak with a coach or therapist who can offer objective, fresh, and supportive eyes on a situation. If you don’t feel like rehashing whatever is causing your bad mood, try grabbing coffee or a meal with a friend. Being around the right people can give you a more positive perspective on life. Recognizing when you need help is one of the hardest skills to develop but reaching out is one of the strongest things you can do.

Manifestation is a 2 Step Process

Manifestation is a Two Step Process

Step 1: Manifest

Manifestation and the The Law of Attraction(LOA) have gained attention and momentum. This is great, LOA has been life changing for me. I want more people to experience the benefits manifestation can offer! Manifestation and LOA is basically, at its simplest terms, the ideology that the thoughts you put into the universe (i.e. manifest) is the energy you will receive back. It’s the idea that when you manifest something, it starts a chain reaction that will bring the thing you desire to you. The idea that you attract the energy you put into the world. Manifesting and visualizing your dreams, fully believing you are capable of achieving them, is empowering and necessary to our growth. So many people limit themselves with their own negative self-talk and belief systems. We all already have everything we need inside of us to thrive. It’s beautiful when individuals know how powerful they are, when they believe in their own greatness. It causes a ripple effect in our world. When you believe in yourself, others feel that energy and will believe in you as well. If you do not believe in yourself, others will feel that energy as well.

People get frustrated when the things they’re manifesting do not fall immediately into their laps. But manifestation does not equate to immediate gratification. It takes time. Individuals claim they believe they already possess what they wish to manifest. However, when they take an honest look inside themselves, they have limiting believes surrounding what they want. For example, John Smith will state that he’s going to be a successful entrepreneur but deep down he doesn’t think he has what it takes to make it, or he believes the market is too saturated. You have to be brutally honest with yourself and if you are experiencing limiting believes. If you have some, be gentle with yourself but get rid of them. Limiting beliefs will get in the way of achieving your goals. We all already possess everything we need to be successful.

Step 2: Do the work

Another vital part of manifestation is you have to do the work. You have to start taking tangible steps towards achieve what you want. You can’t just manifest your goals and then sit on the couch waiting for it to fall into your lap. You need to put systems into place so you’re consistently making progress towards your goals. Use trial and error to figure out what systems work for you, what keeps you motivated. You don’t have to burn yourself out but you have to do the work, you have to keep progressing. Progress, no matter how small, is progress. Small steps taken every day add up to monumental changes. Ask yourself if the actions you are taking are aligned with who you are.

In conclusion, manifestation is great. It’s a tool you should practice every day. But it’s a two steps process. You have to 1. Fully believe you have already achieved what you want to accomplish and 2. Get to work making progress towards achieving those goals.

If you need help creating systems that work for you, identifying limiting beliefs, or replacing limiting beliefs with positive self-talk, schedule a coaching session with me!

You Don’t Need Anyone to Save You

There’s a viral Tik Tok trend going around conveying the idea that no one is coming to save you. That if you want to accomplish something in your life, if you want to get the degree, get in shape, get healthy, play less video games, or save more money; no one is coming to do it for you. This is entirely true. But let’s look at it from an empowered approach instead of a distressed child approach.
You don’t need anyone to come. The reason you’re waiting for, and romanticizing the idea of, someone to come save you is because you don’t think you can do it yourself. You don’t think you are capable of mustering up the strength to accomplish what you want to accomplish. But here is the truth, you are capable. You are in the best position to change your life. In fact, you are the only person who can change your life. Others can try to make you eat the vegetables, go to therapy, tell the truth, put the bottle down, or leave the toxic relationship but not until you actually want to change will you change.
You know better than anyone when something isn’t working for you, what the best method is to achieve your goals, when you need to reach out for help, what does and does not bring you joy. You have to be honest with yourself. You have to be honest about what aspects of your behavior are and are not serving you. And then you have to take action to change those things.
Start by making small changes. Implement boundaries for yourself about when you should and should not go on social media. Buy healthy groceries so you have healthier options in your house. Get a workout buddy to help hold you accountable and get moving. Making and keeping these promises to yourself will show you that you are someone you can rely on.
Foster and nurture your relationship with yourself. Develop self-trust. Develop an understanding that you can run your own life. That you can be in charge of yourself. That you don’t need other people to rescue you, that you can save yourself.
This doesn’t mean you’ll never make mistakes. This doesn’t mean you’ll never need help. But this does mean you’ll find your way through. It does mean you are capable of figuring it out. Learn to utilize the tools at your disposal. Reach out to a friend when feeling low. Hire a coach when the systems you currently have in place aren’t working and you want to try new methods or increase your support system. You can create support systems to help you when things get to be too much. You can push yourself when you want to get things done and rest when you need to rest. You have your own back; you know what you need.
If you fall, which you inevitably will, you’re entirely capable of picking yourself up off the ground. Don’t wait around for someone to do it for you. They can’t do it for you. You’re capable of fulfilling your own needs. No matter how many times you get knocked down, you can pick yourself back up. Remember that and know it to be true.

Setting Boundaries: Remember Your Why

Boundaries are the lines that separate you from another. They are the traits and preferences that make you, you. Setting and communicating boundaries are rewarding interpersonal skills you can develop. They will serve you well in both your personal and professional relationships. Setting boundaries can be challenging, especially at first. But don’t let this deter you! Boundaries are necessary for authentic relationships to flourish. Without authenticity there is no genuine connection. Without genuine connection, it is next to impossible for a relationship to grow.
Even with that knowledge, it can be hard to stick to your boundaries. Especially when people you love and want relationships with are questioning, or worse yet, hurt by your decisions. When setting new boundaries, frequent commentary you may hear are statements like “you’ve changed.” This may be true, but who said change was a bad thing? Change is necessary for growth.
When you do anything new, you will often be met with feelings of discomfort. Your brain wants you to keep doing what’s familiar. Even if what’s familiar hasn’t been working. To keep yourself going in the direction that is true to your individuality, it’s important to remember your why. A strong why is what keeps you going when things get tough, when your brain tries to tell you to stop, that it’s hopeless, or that there is no use in even trying. Your why will keep you going when people you want relationships with try to keep the status quo. Your why is what will guide you through.
Having a strong why when setting boundaries is like a lighthouse guiding ships to safe harbor on a cloudy day. When you start to lose sight of the shore, it’ll keep you on course. It’s your light of truth that will help you keep your boundaries strong once you’ve set them.
Your why is your truth. It’s the reason you are implementing changes in the first place. Identify your why before setting and communicating your boundary. It may be so you can have genuine connection with others. Or so you feel free to be yourself. Or so you feel free to say no. Or, so you feel safe to be true to you. When others express discomfort with your decision, it’s easy to forget your boundaries are to keep you feeling and running your best. If you are met with resistance from people around you, remember this fact. They are not to hurt anyone else around you. It can be easy to fall back into old habits and please others instead of yourself. It’s okay to consider others’ concerns but don’t let it trump your truth. Whatever your “why” is for setting a certain boundary, get clear on it. Write it down on a piece of paper or save it on your phone so that when you feel like you’re going to let your boundaries slip, you can be reminded of them. Remember you’re doing it for you. And true relationships that are genuinely for you, will be better for it. Let your truth be your light house through the discomfort of growth.

3 Productivity Hacks

Time is our most valuable resource. We all want to work efficiently. Here are three hacks to work smarter, not harder.
1. Grouping: Group like tasks together. When you are working on a task, shut off notifications for all other tasks and only work on the designated task. For example, set an hour to work on emails. For that hour, only answer emails. When answering emails don’t answer texts. When on an important conference call, don’t respond to emails. When in the mindset of the designated task, you will be able to accomplish that task more efficiently. Group all your emails together, group all your phone calls together, group your writing and reading times together. It will be easier for you to enter and stay in your work flow when you do this. Commit to your grouping by muting notifications from others tasks. Muting notifications from other tasks will prevent you from leaving your work flow.
2. Passive multitasking: Some claim multitasking is a way to be more efficient. However, that isn’t usually true. Switching between different tasks does not allow you to efficiently complete each task to the best of your ability. It’s best to give your complete focus to the task at hand and then move on to the next task. Passive multitasking however is a different story and may make you more efficient. If you are doing something that doesn’t require a lot of brain power, then multitasking can be your friend. For example, while getting a pedicure answer your social media messages. Or while you’re getting your steps in you can listen to a podcast.
3. Have a plan: I’m sure you have heard the quote “failing to plan is planning to fail”. It’s true. You won’t always be motivated to get done what you have to get done. When motivation alludes you, having a plan to fall back on is extremely helpful. Plan out your month or your week. Plan your day the night before. Make a list of the top things you want to accomplish. Write down your goals. Writing things down makes your more likely to do them. Having a tangible plan and schedule helps you stay on track.

The Messy Middle

People talk about the beginning, the pivotal moment that made everything change. People talk about the end, the dream that finally came to fruition or the failure that knocked them down. But people rarely talk about the messy middle. The middle isn’t a rush of inspiration that makes you change the trajectory of your life. It’s not reaching the top of a mountain and gazing gloriously at the view and it’s not a crash to rock bottom. The middle is a slow, steady, painful, uphill trek through thick mud with falls along the way and few moments of reprieve.

The most unsettling part of the middle is you don’t know how long it is going to last. It’s like you’re climbing in the dark and you don’t know how long it’s going to take to get to the top or when you may lose your footing and fall face first into the suffocating mud. When you do fall, I’d be easy, far too easy, to stay there and suffocate or to let yourself slide all the way down to the bottom.

What’s harder is getting back up. Continually rising after the countless falls. Pushing forward despite all the cuts, bruises, and jabs to the gut that knock the wind out of you. Although you may sometimes waiver, what gets you through is the inner knowing. The inner trust you have with yourself. The knowing that you can do hard things. Being okay with faltering because you know you will get back up.

When doing new and uncertain things you may be tempted to give up and forget why you started in the first place. When things get hard, which they will, you may fall into old coping mechanisms. This will likely happen subconsciously. Your mind wants you to return to things that are familiar, even things that weren’t serving your higher good. Stop these old habits before they become your habits of choice again. Otherwise, these unhealthy habits combined with the doubt of climbing new mountains may cause you to lose your footing.

When talking about transitional periods on his podcast, Mark Groves said “I started to think on transitions. Recognizing how hard it is to carry the space in the middle. And I think so much of our transitions are cut short because we can’t sit in the space of expansion. We can’t sit in the space of trusting that we’re going to arrive. Trusting that we are going to catch up.” Mark proposed the following question: “can you sit in the space that your soul has drawn you towards and just trust?”

We embark on new endeavors, up new mountains, for a reason. We are drawn to certain things and people for a reason. Our soul/intuition/inner knowing/higher self/whatever you want to call it knows what will and will not serve us. If we only stay the course, keep climbing, rise when we fall, and trust ourselves even in the discomfort.

Mindset is Queen

I used to be a litigator. I traveled daily from Long Island to Westchester, Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens courts. I sat in traffic for an average of four to five hours a day anxiously hoping the daily car accidents would not get so out of hand that I would miss my call time. When I finally found parking and made it to the court, I would argue my case in front of a judge who, more often than not, had woken up on the wrong side of the bed. After arguing I would drive to my office where billable hours, efficiency, and one’s ability to play golf proved one’s worth.

This job was what I had worked hard for. But while staring at the dead cockroaches lining the floor of a Queens Supreme Court bathroom after rushing to empty my bladder from the tedious morning commute while simultaneously reciting the facts of my mundane case, it did not seem to be everything I thought it would be.

Luckily, I have never been one to merely accept my circumstances for what they are without further research and thought. I went searching for ways to improve my quality of life. It was then I found mindset work. I discovered law of attraction and dipped my toes into energy work. I realized that the energy I put out into the world is the energy I attracted. I discovered that if I believed my commute and work day would suck, then it would most certainly suck. I discovered the power my mindset had over my overall wellness and satisfaction of life. For the first time, I saw how powerful I was. I could rewrite the story I was telling myself and could thus increase my quality of life. I had a choice. I could choose to look for the good, and in looking for the good, I could bring about more good.

So, instead of dreading my stop and go morning commute, I found and listened to a podcast I loved and became grateful for it. I became thankful that I could listen to podcasts and learn new information while simultaneously doing my job. Instead of rushing back to the office after court, I took 20 mins to explore a new area, stop at a local park, grab lunch at a new place I’ve never been to before. Instead of hating the stop and go of the morning commute, I marveled at the huge and beautiful bridges I got to travel over while leaving Long Island and into the boroughs. The more I worked on positively reframing things in my mind, the more my mind started to naturally do this on its own. People around me at work complained about corporate politics but I looked forward to the walk I took on my lunch break. I realized that I had the power to leave this job whenever I wanted. I wasn’t forced to stay somewhere I was unhappy; I was choosing it. And at any point I could choose to leave. In that truth, I got my power back. I was narrating my story and I could frame it any way I wanted to. Those small mindset shifts, like being grateful for the views of the bridges instead of dreading the hours of traffic, turned into huge mindset shifts. Implementing a midday walk I enjoyed turned into looking for a job I enjoyed more. Each mindset shift gave me more confidence to design a life I loved. Little by little, piece by piece. Don’t underestimate the power of mindset work to change the entire trajectory of your life. It may seem like minute changes, but one day you’ll look back and everything will be different.

Run Your Day, Don't Let Your Day Run You

We’ve all had days when we wake up and chaos smacks us in the face. As soon as we open our eyes, we’re responding to phone calls, emails, text messages, the list goes on. On days like this it’s easy to feel like we’re running around all day but still somehow getting nothing done. The hours tick by in a blur as we constantly react to the never ending stimuli and demands for our time.

How do you make your life feel less chaotic? How do you take steps towards your goals instead of merely treading water to make it through the day? You do it by running your day instead of letting your day run you. By intentionally and mindfully completing projects instead of reacting to every stimulus thrown your way.

Plan the Night before:

The ability to run your day starts will proper planning the night before. Before you go to bed, have a game plan for the next day. Make sure you wind down at a reasonable hour so you are able to get a good night’s sleep. Get things ready for the next morning. Lay out your workout clothes. Have a glass of water next to your bed so you can hydrate when you wake up. Get your favorite coffee mug ready so you have something to look forward to.

**Have a Morning Routine:
I am in love with my morning routine. I go to bed every night looking forward to the habits I created in the morning. Things like journaling, working out, reading and skin care bring me joy. Create a morning routine that you look forward to. When you do this, waking up in the morning will be easier. Not easy, at least for me, but easier. Make your morning routine sacred. Don’t let anything interrupt it.

Wake up with enough time to ground yourself and write a to-do list. List your priorities and what you want to accomplish that day. Carve out some time, even if it’s only a few minutes, to do things for yourself. You will have a much better day if you are able to accomplish some things on your personal to-do list before starting work. This routine will help get you out of a reactive mindset and into an intentional mindset. This will allow you to use your energy in purposeful ways. I don’t look at my messages for the first hour or two of the morning.

By starting your day with a morning routine, you are taking control of the day. If you start your day intentionally with a mindful routine, you’ll be more likely to carry that with you into the rest of your day. You’ll be more equipped to run the rest of the day.

Don’t let your workflow be interrupted

We’ve been led to believe we have to respond to others as soon as possible. That to succeed we always have to be “on.” That we need to stop what we’re doing and respond whenever we’re sent an email with the subject “complete ASAP,” whenever we’re texted, whenever we are called, whenever we are DM’ed, whenever something or someone “dings” us. But it’s impossible to give every request for our time our immediate attention. It’s not feasible to be constantly available for everyone and everything. Just because someone asks for your time does not mean they are entitled to it right away, or at all.

You don’t have to always be available. Re-establish your boundaries. Set time frames for when you are going to work on certain tasks. Designate a set hour for answering emails, set a time for responding to texts, a time for research etc. Batching similar tasks together will make you more effective than constantly switching back and forth between different tasks. If you’re in an email state of mind you’ll be able to work through emails more efficiently than if you are constantly switching between emails and phone calls. Don’t leave your work flow to return a text message right away just because your feel obligated to give someone an answer as soon as possible. When you let distractions in, it makes it harder to stay in a productive flow.

Mindset

Accomplish tasks when you are in the proper mindset. Don’t go into a project at work stressed and cursing your boss for throwing X,Y, & Z on your plate. Don’t power through the assignment just to get it done. We’ve all been there and done that and it’s never a good feeling. Working from a stressed and resentful state of mind rarely produces our best work. Take a moment to pause and get your mindset right before getting to work. Take a step back. Adjust your perspective. Switch your point of view from an “I have to do this” mindset to an “I get to do this mindset.” Work on projects with intention not stress.

We often get lost in victimized narratives about how busy and overworked we are. But we get to choose what our day looks like. What you want to spend your time on. Explore where you can find more time in your day. Examine who you are and are not making yourself available to. Where you are spending your precious time and resources. By taking control of your life, and enforcing boundaries you’ll get more done and be more productive all while experiencing more joy. And remember run your day, don’t let your day run you.

Sign up for coaching with me and let's take control of your life.
