Core Spirit Ratings
5 reasons to match your nutrition and training plan

80% kitchen. 20% gym. It’s a stat you’ll have heard before, but one you probably still struggle to wrap your head around – especially after an hour-long slog on the squat rack. How can all those reps and interval sprints only be responsible for a fifth of your body transformation? In short: because those workouts can only bring about the change you want with the correct fuel.

Follow these quick wins and you’ll be well on your way to the transformation you’ve always wanted.

1. It supports your training goals in the gym

The major differences between diet plans should be the surplus or deficit applied to your daily calorie targets. This determines whether you will be losing weight (deficit), gaining weight (surplus) or maintaining your current weight (equal).

You can also alter the ratios between your macronutrients (protein, fat and carbs) that make up your total calorie count. This will support your individual requirements and training schedule. For example, if you’re doing a lot of cardio you can increase the amount of carbs for more energy, or extra protein if you’re lifting weights and need to help your muscles recover.

2. It’ll make you more conscious of the foods you’re eating

Working towards a daily target of calories and macronutrients will make you appreciate just how difficult it is to fit junk into a healthy diet. Sugary drinks, milky coffee and alcohol can all be very dense in calories and therefore add a lot of extra calories. And that’s without adding anything meaningful towards your macronutrient targets. Instead, fill your diet with plenty of lean meats, an array of colourful veg, whole grains and healthy fat sources – you’ll soon find this leaves very little room for anything else.

3. You won’t over eat

This may sound obvious, but an increased training regimen can leave you constantly hungry. Plus, a study published in the Journal of the Association for Consumer Research found that eating healthy foods can encourage you to over eat because you assume it’s guilt free. However, if you are consuming more energy than you are using then you will put on weight, regardless of whether the food you are eating is healthy or not.

4. But you won’t under eat either

Under eating can be very dangerous, the body needs a certain amount of vitamins, minerals and energy to function… A lack of which can result in mood swings (no one likes you when you’re hangry), lack of concentration and a negative affect on your training progress.

5. You can split your macros throughout the day

Having macronutrient and calorie targets is one thing, but a well-balanced meal plan will help you get the most out of them. For example, the standard carbs for breakfast and protein for dinner protocol won’t work in conjunction with a proper training plan.

Your body can only process so much protein at one time before you end up losing the excess in urine, plus your muscles are hungry for fuel all day so spacing your intake across the day helps them repair more quickly. A meal plan that evenly splits your macros across 3-5 meals a day is the best way to achieve this.

So, how do you go about matching your nutrition and training plan?

First, you need to work out the amount of calories you burn every day just by being alive – also known as you basal metabolic rate. Which is easier than you think. All you need to do is click here.

Next you need to decide if your aim is to lose weight or bulk up and then either add or minus 20% calories accordingly to create your daily intake target.

Once you have your calorie target, then work out how many grams of each macronutrient you need to hit that total. To do that first decide on a ratio split – CS recommends using 40% protein, 30% fat and 30% carbs as your starting point – and then use the numbers below to start working it out.

Here are the calorie values for each macronutrient:

– 1g Protein = 4 Calories

– 1g Carbohydrate = 4 Calories

– 1g Fat = 9 Calories

So, take 40% of your calorie target and divide that number by four to find out how many grams of protein you should be eating. Then repeat this little bit of maths for your carbs and fat too.

Time to eat your way to body transformation you’ve been craving.

10 Inspiring Ketogenic Diet Instagrammers You Should Be Following

The ketogenic diet has blown up in popularity over the past year. And nowhere is that more obvious than on Instagram, where hundreds of accounts and hashtags are dedicated to the low-carb, high-fat way of eating.

What’s with the rise in popularity? The No. 1 reason people turn to the ketogenic diet (or “keto diet,” for short) is for its potential weight loss benefits, says Abby Langer, RD, of Toronto, the founder of Abby Langer Nutrition.

The diet, made up of so much high fat and so few carbs, is a far cry from the way most Americans normally eat, and Langer says it’s notoriously difficult to follow. Many keto followers look to Instagram for menu ideas, along with inspiration to stay on track.

Here’s who to start following, stat, whether you’re just starting the diet or have been a keto cheerleader for years.

1. @100ketodays

Lex, who’s based in Pittsburgh, has lost 63 pounds (lb) since she started her keto journey in 2014. And though she’s hit some bumps in the road (because, as she says on her blog, life happens), she recommitted in February 2017. She now posts every day (or multiple times a day) on Instagram, usually about food. But she also hosts healthy diet bets: You put down money betting you’ll lose a certain percentage of your weight. If you succeed, you get to split the pot with the other winners. How’s that for motivation?

2. @fooddreamer

Carolyn from the fooddreamer instagram account

Michael Schmitt

Pretty food pics, right this way. This Instagram account is an extension of the blog All Day I Dream About Food. Author Carolyn was diagnosed with gestational diabetes during her third pregnancy, which motivated her to cut down on carbs. But she didn’t want to give up her favorite foods. So she tweaks them to make them low carb and keto friendly (including faves like marzipan, mini doughnuts, and peanut butter cookies). The bottom line? Keto doesn’t have to feel like deprivation.

3. @cheeseisthenewbread

Christina Disley makes following the keto diet much less torturous and much more delicious than it seems on paper. Her posts focus on food items, many of which don’t seem like diet foods at all (looking at you, meatball marinara sliders). Disley drops the recipes into each Instagram caption, which makes for easy referencing. She also estimates the nutrients in each serving and how much the dish costs to make, which is helpful in showing healthy eating doesn’t need to break the bank.

4. @healthfulpursuit

Leanne Vogel

Leanne Vogel

Leanne Vogel is the mastermind behind @healthfulpursuit. She’s been following the keto diet since 2014 and shares keto-friendly meal inspo and motivational quotes, though she isn’t afraid to point out the ugly sides of keto (ahem, keto flu). If you love her stuff, join the 130,000-plus Instagram followers and check out her YouTube channel, books, podcast, and Facebook group.

5. @keto_bean

Rely on Laura, who’s studying to be a nutritional therapy practitioner, for inventive keto foods you probably haven’t thought of before, like these cauliflower sandwich thins and Keto Copycat “Nutri-grain” bars. She also posts about keto products that are on the market and gives her honest take on them.

6. @ketokarma

Suzanne Ryan

Jennifer Skog; KetoKarma

Look no further for super inspiring before-and-after pics. Suzanne Ryan (aka @ketokarma) has lost 120 lb since she ditched carbs and started loading up on fat. She’s also the author of Simply Keto.On her page, you’ll find a bounty of colorful food photos — usually of simple, straightforward meals you can make yourself. She also posts snapshots of her plates when she eats out, which can give you an idea of what to order at restaurants and proves that, yes, you can still have a social life on keto.

7. @ibreatheimhungry

Every keto follower who thinks they’ve given up dessert for good needs to give Mellissa Sevigny a follow. Sure, she’s got some posts about savory dishes, but the real standouts are those that showcase her pies, cheesecakes, muffins, and cookies. She also occasionally posts snappy Instagram videos showing the recipes being made. For the old-fashioned text version, you can head over to her website, where you can also join her forum for support from fellow low-carb devotees.

8. @ketodiet_app

Martina Slajerova

Martina Slajerova

Martina Slajerova has made a name for herself in the keto world. She’s a blogger, author, and creator of keto and paleo diet apps. Oh, and she counts 110,000-plus followers on Instagram. She promotes the low-carb way of life (and says it’s helped her deal with an autoimmune thyroid disease) through informational posts about following keto, and tons of delicious recipe ideas.

9. @ketosaurus_rex

Heather started the keto diet in January of 2016. Since then, she’s lost 135 lb on keto, plus 50 more from before she jumped on the low-carb bandwagon. She says she’s still got more weight to lose, and you can follow along as she posts easy food ideas, meal prep tips, and adventures in airfrying.

10. @ryanplowery

Ryan Lowery

Courtesy of Ryan Lowery

Ryan Lowery takes a brainy approach to the diet. The PhD has published dozens of research papers on human performance and sports nutrition, wrote the book The Ketogenic Bible: The Authoritative Guide to Ketosis, and focused his dissertation on enhancing the keto diet through different nutrients and supplements (including exogenous ketones). Point is: The guy knows his stuff. And his Instagram page is filled with inspiring posts — not just about sticking with keto but for living your best life away from the kitchen as well.

10 Instagram accounts to follow for low-carb and ketogenic diet recipes

Looking for some creative ways to cut carbs this year? These food bloggers have plenty of ideas to get you started.

There’s nothing quite like scrolling through a gorgeous Instagram feed full of food.

But if you’re trying to cut down on carbohydrates, it might make sense to limit the amount of drool-worthy cake and cookie photos. Luckily, there are plenty of Instagram accounts created solely for our viewing (and tasting) pleasure, to inspire those looking to try a new eating plan in the new year.

Cutting processed foods and carbs has helped plenty of people lose weight. Popular diets like South Beach and Whole30 keep lean proteins and fresh veggies centerstage. But a more extreme example of low-carb dieting is gaining popularity with the ketogenic diet which encourages adherents to eat higher-fat foods and protein (that’s a solid “yes” to eggs, steaks, bacon, butter and avocado). The diet advises followers to consume 60 to 80 percent of their calories from fat, 15 to 35 percent of calories should come from protein sources, and carbs should be kept at about 5 percent of one’s daily caloric intake. The rigid nature of the diet can be difficult for some to follow, so a lot of people turn to (where else?) social media for advice.

There are plenty of self-proclaimed “healthy-eating” accounts out there, so it’s important to always consult with a medical professional before embarking on any serious lifestyle changes.

“The great thing about social media is that it provides visual inspiration and can be helpful in getting people excited to make positive changes to their health,” Frances Largeman-Roth, RDN, nutrition expert and author of “Eating in Color,” told TODAY Food. “Just make sure that you’re checking in with a credible health professional before following any advice you see online.”

And while these popular accounts may offer unique recipes and trendy eating ideas, Largeman-Roth, cautions that going keto isn’t for everyone: “While it’s safe for most healthy individuals, it’s not appropriate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or kids.”

These 10 accounts are full of new recipe inspiration for those looking to lose weight, cut carbs or just try something new … with some deliciously eye-catching photos, of course.

1. Low Carb Yum

Food blogger Lisa MarcAurele specializes in low-carb, gluten-free and keto-friendly foods. She’s been creating recipes since 2010 after she herself adopted a low-carb, low-sugar eating plan. Her motto “keep it simple” is evident in her recipes like baked zucchini chips (which is just three ingredients!) and a low-carb chicken soup recipe that can be made in a slow cooker.

2. The Delicious

This Instagram account is designed to help followers “eat beauty every day” and is managed by Sarah Gim, founder of TheDeliciousLife.com. The Delicious is filled with colorful recipes that utilize lots of fresh produce. Many of her posts provide easy swap tips for low-carb dieters, coupled with light-hearted, cheeky captions that are far from preachy. From eye-catching smoked salmon platters to shakshuka made with broccolini, chard, collards, kale, and avocado, there are plenty of refreshing takes on healthful eating.

Recipes like her Wild King Salmon with Wild Citrus and Herbs, got a ton of great feedback for being simple, beautiful and tasty.

3. Keto Karma

Suzanne Ryan, the author of “Simply Keto,” lost 120 pounds by sticking to a ketogenic diet plan and consuming very few carbs. Her Instagram account has nearly 250,000 followers and plenty of posts with advice that will make it simpler for beginners to get started.

In addition to posting recipes that are easy to make at home, she also shows keto-friendly foods she eats while dining out to help make the super strict diet seem a bit more accessible.

4. Halle Berry

In January 2018, the Oscar Award-winning actress told fans that she’d been following the ketogenic diet for years but encouraged people to think of it as a “lifestyle change” and not just a diet. In addition to following Halle Berry because she’s, well, Halle Berry, keto dieters or people who just want to try eating like one of the world’s most famous people will find plenty of inspiration. Her page is sprinkled with #FitnessFriday motivation tips, as well as some keto-devoted posts. In her stories, Berry often shares recipes crafted by her personal chef, Christina Shabatian.

On a recipe for Zucchini Pasta with Pesto, Berry wrote that it’s one the whole family can enjoy, “picky eaters included.”

5. Nom Nom Paleo

Michelle Tam, the award-winning food blogger behind this wildly popular feed (and growing empire), creates umami-packed dishes that are great for easy weeknight meals or fancier dinner parties. Not all of her recipes are super low in carbs but her ability to transform mundane staples like chicken breast or cauliflower rice is pretty unmatched.

6. Keto Connect

This page created by a keto-loving couple, gym partners, food bloggers and YouTubers provides new recipes weekly. Low-carb dieters who still want to enjoy dessert or those seeking simple tips to eating fewer carbs overall will enjoy Keto Connect’s approach.

“I love their enthusiasm and creativity,” said Largeman-Roth, “just remember that if you’re embarking on a diet overhaul like keto, you should talk to your doctor or a registered dietitian nutritionist first —don’t just rely on Insta wisdom.”

“Thanks for this one guys, I’ve been looking for a good pecan recipe,” one pleased follower wrote on the account’s recipe for Pecan Chocolate Chip Muffins.

7. The Diet Doctor

This Instagram account is entirely devoted to “making low carb and keto simple” with hundreds of keto-approved recipes as well as meal plans. Some plans, even those filled with warm, hearty dishes to alleviate those winter blues, keep carb counts at 25 grams or less for the entire day.

8. Keto Guido (aka Vinny Guadagnino)

Former “Jersey Shore” star Vinny Guadagnino is a hardcore keto fan — that means no more spaghetti tutorials with Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford (unless it’s zoodles with that meat sauce). On his second, food-focused Instagram account, Guadagnino notes, “Not a medical expert. Just a guido who went Keto and never felt better.”

In addition to sharing plenty of before and after selfies, Guadagnino posts tons of photos of very, very simple homemade meals, ideas for eating out and keto-friendly snacks that he eats to keep himself satisfied throughout the day. He often responds to fans looking for more specifics on his diet, too.

“I’ve got to hand it to Vinny for calling out that he’s not a medical professional. But just keep in mind that celebrities and influencers may be getting endorsement deals for mentioning products on their feed,” advised Largeman-Roth.

9. Keto Adapted

This Instagram feed has lots of low-carb, high-fat meal ideas from around the web that aren’t just keto-friendly — many of them are actually beautiful. Who knew fat could do that? From a hearty breakfast pizza to homemade peppermint patties and grilled shrimp skewers, this page has something for everyone looking to cut down on carbs.

10. Fit Men Cook

Kevin Curry, the Texas-based author of the cookbook “Fit Men Cook,” posts tons of recipes for both men and women who are looking for low-carb foods and transformational food ideas, like healthier takes on hearty chilis, chicken nuggets (he uses quinoa for breading) and more. His 1.3 million followers frequently comment that he makes eating healthy “fun” and that his dishes are packed with flavor. Largeman-Roth also liked many of his recipes.

Curry also claims, “there’s no one on IG who can clean a kitchen faster than me” in a post that showed what actually goes in to a food shoot that involves prepping and cooking 24 dishes.

TOP 10 Best Massage and Spa Retreats Across the world

1. Aro Hā Wellness Retreat

Overlooking the otherworldly expanse of Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand’s Southern Alps, Aro Hā is an intimate 20-room lodge offering holistic practices (such as yoga and meditation) meant to invigorate the body and recalibrate the spirit. The self-sustainable property’s biggest draw is its epic setting between colossal sapphire lakes and snowcapped peaks—all of which the minimalist-chic cabins seamlessly blend into. Mindfulness is a core mantra here, and, with a setting like this, you’ll get plenty of practice at it.

2. Lake Austin Spa Resort

Set on a picturesque hillside of its namesake lake, this all-inclusive destination spa attracts relaxation seekers from all over—you’ll see them, buffed and polished from their treatments and eager for more, strolling the grounds all day in their robes. Beds are extremely soft, and the lavender-scented products in the bathrooms are from the resort’s own line; in fact, they’re the same ones used in your spa treatments. Speaking of, all the spa’s products are grown on the grounds (wildflower and organic honey are used in the facial scrubs) and some treatments take place in semi-open settings.

3. Vila Vita Parc

The stunning natural beauty and bracing sea air of Portugal’s Algarve region are medicine on their own. But taking it up a notch is the spa at Vila Vita Parc, which occupies its own, dedicated building and has been designed by French spa leader Sisley. With a brand like that behind the place, it’s no surprise that skincare is a focus, calling upon products that incorporate botanical extracts and essential oils. Expect pore-tightening facials, toning body treatments, and medical-grade pedi-cures (get it?) from legendary podiatrist Margaret Dabbs. On the activity side of wellness, there are personal trainers on hand for custom workouts and deep dives into the HYPOXI Method, which is said to combine vacuum therapy with a moderate workout routine and balanced nutrition plan to eradicate stubborn fat deposits, eliminate fluid retention, tone the skin, and accelerate metabolism. The spa takes a holistic, body-soul-mind approach to wellness, and to that end, it has a garden yoga pavilion for private, group, and aerial classes.

4. Six Senses Zil Pasyon

Felicité, the fifth-biggest island in the Seychelles, is considered one of the country’s most beautiful. Giant granite boulders lie scattered atop hills, like the remnants of a pétanque match amongst the gods, and the sand is so fine that it squeaks as you step into the clear aquamarine shallows. Amongst this near-otherworldly splendor is a man-made retreat just as spectacular: the Six Senses Zil Pasyon. The 30 glass-fronted rooms are set among boulders and trees, with wide decks and plunge pools outside, and furnishings in ocean-inspired hues inside. At the beach bar, giant hammocks are strung over the water. For breakfast, there are green smoothies, rainbow-colored fruit platters, and oysters; at night, it’s French Champagne and fire-cooked lobster, followed by rum tastings in a cozy bar. In between, there are hills to hike, reefs to dive around, and palm trees to lie beneath. Oh, and there’s a spa tucked between boulders by the sea, and a yoga platform where an instructor leads daily sun salutations.

5. The Ranch Malibu

Tough love is the order of the day at this health retreat. The core program is seven days of rigor, though four- and ten-day options are available at a spin-off at the nearby Four Seasons Westlake Village. But go for the core—if you’re ready for a challenge. Nothing is optional: not the 5:30 wake-up knocks (they will persist until you answer), not the 6am yoga or stretching sessions, not the hours of morning hiking, nor the afternoons spent in the gym or the near-vegan eating plan. If you wonder why people pay for this, you aren’t alone. But if you’re among the people who get it, then it’s the sort of yearly wellness tune-up that you’ll look forward to. The Ranch tends to attract type-A personalities, so there can be competition on the hiking trail, but the guides are supportive and encouraging for guests of all levels. And the payoff is a few pounds of lasting weight loss, better muscle tone, glowing skin, and a well-earned sense of accomplishment. It helps that the lodgings are sublimely comfortable, there are daily massages, and the food—pared down as it may be—is of the best organic ingredients and beautifully presented.

6. Palace Merano Espace Henri Chenot

“Health for life” is the guiding motto at this wellness resort in the Dolomites. The accommodations are lavish and comfortable, with 100 rooms and suites in a grand, historic building with chandeliers and parquet floors. The wellness component follows the Chenot Method, a system that was developed by Catalan-French biologist and naturopath Henri Chenot nearly 50 years ago. That means a strong focus on bio-enegetic medicine—meant to get the body’s energy flowing freely along the meridians defined by traditional Chinese medicine—and detox, accomplished via lymphatic drainage massage and a plant-based diet heavy on hypo-allergenic food. The fitness component is mostly gentle, including floor exercises like pilates and nordic walking outdoors.

7. Grand Resort Bad Ragaz

Wellness seekers have flocked to the thermal mineral springs of this Swiss wellness resort since the 13th century, when Benedictine monks first discovered them. The water is said to have therapeutic effects on the metabolism, heart function, rheumatic conditions, and diseases of the nervous system—or, in other words, many of the afflictions of modern life. Regardless of whether the springs live up to all their claims, they’re soothing nonetheless, and they represent a focal point of what is now a lavish resort with outdoor and indoor bathing facilities (in a natural cave and a grand hall with faux frescoes, respectively), a center for Eastern and Western spa treatments, medical facilities with doctors whose specialties range from dermatology to sports medicine, nearly a dozen restaurants and bars, and a casino. This isn’t an eat-your-peas kind of place, either; the activities include golf, shopping, and even winery tours and tastings.

8. Schloss Elmau

Talk about a room with a view: comprising two five-star hotels, this luxury resort sits some 60 miles south of Munich in a verdant valley of the Bavarian Alps. Built between 1914 and 1916 at the behest of Dr. Johannes Müller, a renowned Protestant theologian and philosopher, Schloss Elmau was originally intended as a cultural, communal respite from the outside world—a status it maintains today. The castle complex frequently entertains yoga retreats, world-renowned classical music concerts, and international conferences like the 41st G7 summit, which it hosted in 2015.

9. Lanserhof Tegernsee

One of Europe’s most modern health resorts, Lanserhof Tegernsee combines uplifting architecture with breathtaking nature, and has more than 20,000 square feet set aside for holistic treatments that promote spiritual and physical well-being. Some of the programs on offer are quite rigorous, including a fasting retreat and detox according to the principle of F.X. Mayr, but there are also gentler programs focused on better sleep and preventing burnout. The design of the accommodations is meant to welcome guests with open arms—a sentiment expressed with flowing forms, harmonious colors, and plenty of warm, natural light.

10. Cal-a-Vie

At Cal-a-Vie, you could mistakenly believe you were somewhere in the bucolic French countryside, rather than forty-something miles from San Diego. Suites are simple and rustic, and the experience is straightforward: wake to a sunrise hike and follow it up with any combination of spinning, water volleyball, or piloxing (dance, pilates, and boxing). Soothe your sore muscles with a trip to the world-class spa, where the massages are particularly memorable. Pair your deliciously pampering treatments with an on-site nutritionist, and you’ll leave feeling like a million bucks.
