Shadow Work - Your Spiritual Evolution Depends On It

Shadow Work: The Most Crucial Part Of Your Personal Growth & Spiritual Evolution

Shadow Work

"It hits different when you can look at all the parts of yourself - the good, the bad, the ugly, and still choose to love it all. It makes you feel whole. Complete."

What is shadow work?

A term coined by psychiatrist Carl Jung way back in the day * hehe *, describing a method or process of consciously becoming aware of your unconscious self, and consciously integrating it back into the true being of a person as a whole. Jung believed that at a very young age the psyche develops a compartment of filled with unfavorable parts of themselves, referred to as the 'Shadow Self', as a result of past experiences. As we go through life we tend to identify with parts of ourselves, only part of the time - and therefore never truly are tapped into the 100% authentic version of our being. Everyone has a 'shadow self', unknowingly or not; and the 'shadow self' is a whole half of what makes you, YOU. Shadow Work is a way for you to come into your full power and undo what the 'shadow self' has done.

Benefits

  • improves communication;
  • improves relationships & interactions with others;
  • heals past & generational trauma;
  • feeling of completion.

How-To Do Shadow Work?

Awareness

The very nature of the shadow, means that your unaware of its prescence & what it holds within. What you can see however is projections of the shadow self in the form of triggers.

Write

Start by documenting situations that happen throughout the day, that may have triggered you. Go back and read what was written and look for patterns of behavior that caused undesirable feelings or emotions.

Journal Questions to ask yourself:
  • What does my inner child want me to know?
  • What am I hiding from myself?
  • What am I not seeing?
  • What qualities am I projecting onto others?
  • Where do I need help?
  • What is the source of my pain?
  • What will I be able to achieve once I remove this pain?
  • How do I move forward?
  • What are the next logical steps?

Acceptance

Accept all the emotions that came up, feel them, validate them, and accept them. They have served you well and kept you alive. Thank them for protecting you. It sounds silly, but talk to them outloud as if they were a child. Be compassionate.

Unconditional Love

Self-acceptance is perhaps the best gift you can give yourself.

Unconditional self-acceptance is a valuable quality, as it is linked to a variety of positive outcomes such as enhanced psychological wellbeing (MacInnes, 2006) and life harmony (Garcia, Nima, & Kjell, 2014)

Try using this words of affirmation for self-acceptence & unconditional love:

  • I accept & respect myself.
  • I welcome & embrace all my of my thoughts, feelings, actions as an innate part of my being.
  • I am perfect as I am.
  • I am whole.
  • I am complete.
  • I am grounded.
  • I have people all around me supporting me for who I am.
  • I am not responsible for the opinions of others.
  • I surround myself with people that love me unconditionally.
  • I am worthy of all I desire.

Discover Your Soul's Purpose With Tarot

Find Your Souls Purpose with a Tarot Birth Chart

In tarot, you have multiple cards that represent you, called your birth cards or your soul cards representing your identity, inner psyche and journey in this life. Your birth cards can be broken down into 3 different cards:
  1. Personality Card - your purpose this lifetime
  2. Soul Card - your purpose across all lifetimes
  3. Shadow Card - your shadow self or EGO

Find these three cards and their meaning, here's how:

  • write down your full date of birth in number format ( ie December 12, 1999 = 12/12/1999;
  • find the sum of all 8 numbers by adding each number from your birthday together ( ie 1+2+1+2+1+9+9+9 = 34;
  • find the sum of this number the same way until you arrive at a sum that is less than or equal to the number 22 ( ie 3+4= 7 ); this number will represent your 1st card (personality);
  • IF you can further reduce the number you arrived at for your Personality card, do so until you arrive at a single digit number ( ie Personality card = 19, 1+9= 10/ and 1+0=1 ); this number represents your Soul card.

** If you received a single digit number after the first sum, like I did in Example #2, then your Personality & Soul cards are the same; if you were able to reduce the number of your personality card further, like I did in Example #4 you will have 2 card numbers (Personality = 7 and Soul = 1) **

Finding your shadow card can be a little confusing - so I have taken the liberty of doing the hard part for ya ** your welcome **
PERSONALITY+SOUL SHADOW MINOR PATTERNS THEME
1-1 / 10-1 / 19-10-1 10 & 19 / 19 / 10 1's Magician (Sun, Wheel of Fortune, Magician) Initiation & Manifestation
2-2 / 11-2 / 20-2 11 & 20 / 20 / 11 2's High Priestess (Judgement, Justice, High Priestess) Balance through intuitive awareness
3-3 / 12-3 / 21-3 12 & 21 / 21 / 12 3's Empress (World, Hanged Man, Empress) Creative Imagination & Viewpoints
4-4 / 13-4 / 22-4 13 & 22 4's Emperor (Fool, Death, Emperor Control through transformation
5-5 / 14-5 14 5's Hierophant (Temerance, Hierophant) Pursuit of knowledge through teachings

Book your Soul's Purpose Tarot Reading

Now we know our Tarot Birth Chart - time for the final exercise:

When you look at your personality, soul card, and your shadow card, you realize that all of the cards have a single digit in common - a single digit prime number. That number can also relate to the minor arcana cards throughout the deck.

Take a look at each minor arcana card separately and see what it has to tell you
(The minor arcana cards will come into play more in future posts on this topic).

Finally you can take each card and lay them out in front of you and take em alllll in, notice symbols, colors, any intuitive meanings you may get, how the card makes you feel.

  • Do you notice any patterns?

  • What card are you most drawn to?

  • Does the card mean something to you other the typical meaning?

  • Use these cards in your mediation practice to really get to know the cards and see what they’re trying to tell you.

Creating a Sacred Space For Your Tarot Readings

How To Create a Sacred Space For Your Tarot Reading

Whether you are a seasoned tarot reader, or you are thinking about scheduling your very 1st private tarot reading - consider creating a sacred space for your tarot readings.

Why:

By creating a sacred space for your tarot reading, you assist energy to flow freely and easily - promoting a deeper connection with the cards & setting the stage to gain the most insight a tarot reading has to offer!

How:

Consider these [ 4 ] key elements

  1. Physical Space
  2. Emotional Space
  3. Spiritual Space
  4. Mental Space
A Sacred Physical Space
The sacred physical space represents the tangible world around all us: the setting, the room, seating arrangments, the tarot cards, where the cards are laid, etc. A sacred physical space is one that radiates positive energy.
  • Create a space that's private & safe

Tarot Readers should spend time considering the location of their readings & choose an area that will be free of outside distractions and/or interupptions.

Querents, or individuals seeking guidance from the tarot, should also consider their location at the time of your reading. Would you prefer a virtual reading in the comfort of your own sacred space? Or would you feel more comfortable outside of your home, such as a face-to-face tarot reading?

** TAROT TIP **

Consider doing/having a tarot reading outdoors in nature.

  • Decorate your space

Add candles, crystals, beautiful fabrics, photos, spiritual or religious relics - anything that makes your heart smile should absolutly be a part of the decor in your sacred physical space.

  • Clean & Declutter

A chaotic external environment can promote a chaotic internal environment - keeping your space clear of clutter also alows energy to flow freely & easily into your space. A clean sacred physical space also can help move out old, stagnant, low vibrational energy.

A Sacred Emotional Space
A sacred emotional space is one where the reader and querent are free of any negative thoughts, and/or emotional 'baggage' that may have piled up throughout the day.
  • Just breathe

Become present by being aware of your breathe. The practice of breathework has many positive effects on a persons emotional state and is an amazing way to connect a reader, querent, and the cards.

  • Expectations

Discussing expectations prior to a tarot reading can help the reader best assess their knowledge, skill set & ability to provide a querent with the guidance, clarity, or advice they are seeking. Querents should be clear & concise with your reader about the information you expect to gain from a tarot reading - this will also provide the space for a reader to address any possible unrealistic expectations, which will benefit querents in the long run by preventing any misunderstandings.

** TAROT TIP **

READERS - Consider creating a infograph or document to provide clients with before their scheduled reading on how to prepare for a tarot reading (check out my article on How to Prepare for a Tarot Reading for more on this).
QUERENTS - Consider creating a list of questions for your reader before your tarot reading. Definatley create a list before your appointment of questions or areas you'd like to focus on during your reading.

  • Rapport & trust is imperative

Begin building rapport with your querent or reader as soon as possible! This is easily done by reaching out via email or a brief text. Start by introducing yourself, have a form or questionaire to break the ice, ask the querent if they have ever had a tarot reading before, readers can explain their reading style, or simply ask if your reader or querent has any questions they'd like to ask you. A little communication can go a long way in establishing trust.

** TAROT TIP **

Read my article 'How to Prepare for a Tarot Reading' for more ideas on building rapport & trust.

A Sacred Spiritual Space
A sacred spiritual space brings a special energy to tarot readings & will help you connect to your intuition during a reading.
  • Create an alter

Just as you set up your sacred physical space with all the things that make your heart sing, a alter is an amazing way to create a sacred spiritual space. Set up a small table, nook, area in your home that has all of your spiritually significant items eaily and readily available to you.

  • Clear mind

Abstain from caffine, alcohol, drugs, or any mind altering substance 24 hours prior to your tarot reading. Having a clear mind will greatly benefit your tarot reading experience.

  • Clear your energetic body

AKA Chakras - to connect deeply with your highest spiritual self. Spend time before a reading in meditation, doing stretches or go for a brisk walk. An energetic body in motion, stays in motion - an energetic body at rest .. stays at rest.

** TAROT TIP **

Spend 15-30 minutes before your tarot reading focusing on the energy moving through your body - start at your finger tips and work your way down to your toes; visualize the energy coursing through your physical body (pay attention to any areas that are difficult to sense the pulsing energy - this can indicate a blockage).

A Sacred Mental Space
Creating a sacred mental space is one where you are a clear & focused mind, temporarily letting go of any extenuating situations occupying your mind: shopping lists, carpooling, the rude conversation - leave all of that ... out of your reading.
  • Meditate

I know. I know. Meditating isnt for everyone, right? Wrong. There are many types of meditation and various physical, psychological, and emotional benefits of meditation. Do some research, try different methods, and apply the technique that resonates with you.

  • Intentions

Spend time to contemplate what are your intentions either giving or recieving a tarot reading. Intentions should be clear and defined before the start of your tarot reading. Once you’re established in a state of restful awareness, release your intentions and desires. The best time to plant your intentions is during the period after meditation, while your awareness remains centered and before the day of your tarot reading.

  • Just breathe ... again

Take a few moments to focus on how your breathe feels as it enters your body, as well as how it feels on exhalation. Use deep, controlled, breathes, that feel comfortable (breathework should never be uncomfortable).

** TAROT TIP **

Consider begining and ending your tarot readings with a guided breathing exercise together! Simply aligning our breathe can increase the connevtion between a tarot reader & querent. Try starting together with a [ 4 ] second inhale, a [ 4 ] second hold/pause, and a slow controlled [ 6 ] second exhale. Adjust times as needed.

Preparing For a Tarot Reading

So you scheduled a tarot reading - what now?

There are a few things you can do prior to your reading that can help get the guidance, clarity, and advice you need. Here's how you can prepare for your appointment.

Days Before:

Get clear.

What information are you hoping to get from your reading? What area of your life would you like to address?
In the days leading up to your reading, write down specific questions in the area you are intrested in focusing on during your appointment. The more clear you are, the more in depth the reader can get with your specific concerns. Keeping an open mind, & having a positive attitude leading up to your appointment, will really add value to the overall experience.

(1) Day before:

Be sober & clear headed.

Abstaining from alcohol & drugs 24 hours before your reading will help you feel calm, centered, & clear headed.

NOTE:
Be sure to have access to any technology you may need such as a ZOOM account, and wifi - test it out before your appointment.

Day of:

The day has arrived - now what?

Hydrate & abstain from caffeine. Have a pen & paper near by to take notes during your reading (don't forget the questions you have already written). Set aside 15-30 minutes immediately prior to the reading getting centered. Sit in a quiet space and review your questions. Most importantly - remain open, be present, & enjoy!

After:

Pheww! That was a lot of information, I know.

Digest it. Spend time in contemplation & as always - only take what resonates. Not everything will make perfect sense right now. Leave a review if your reader has this option, it helps future clients find the perfect match, and allows the reader an opportunity to improve their services. As time progresses look back on your experience. Allow 6-8 weeks time to access the accuracy. If you are pleased with your reading, schedule a follow up appointment.

VIRTUAL & TELEPHONE TAROT TIPS:

Ask your reader if you can video/voice record the reading to look back on whenever you wish.
