The Top 8 Foods and Drinks Writers Can Use to Nourish Their Bodies and Stay Productive

We all know how important good nutrition is. But did you know certain foods and drinks can help with different brain functions? It’s true. Studies have shown that certain foods and drinks can help improve productivity, creativity, and inspiration.

These three traits are essential for everyone but are especially important for writers and other creatives. Most creators must create something daily to improve their craft and make good money. What foods and drinks can help these traits? Read on to find out.

Foods For Improved Productivity

Productivity helps keep us going. It keeps us motivated to keep writing. Without it, we couldn’t finish books or blog posts.

Coffee

Many writers rely on coffee to increase their productivity. Several scientific facts prove coffee increases productivity. The caffeine in coffee attaches itself to the receptors in our brain that generally bind with adenosine, the chemical that makes us tired. That allows us to think clearly so we can create. Some studies prove just the smell of coffee can wake you up.

Tea

For those who don’t like coffee, tea has similar effects. Coffee has more caffeine, but tea can keep you going longer because it contains l-theanine, a chemical that metabolizes caffeine over a long period. Even caffeine-free teas, like peppermint and chai tea, can keep you going longer than coffee.

Blueberries

Blueberries are considered a superfood. They contain antioxidants that keep oxygen and blood flowing to your brain, which makes it more active.

Water

One of the main reasons people get tired during the day is dehydration. Productivity and tiredness are distinct. Drinking water can improve focus and clarity, which are the main components of productivity.

Foods for Improved Creativity

If you’ve ever had a moment when you couldn’t find any creative inspiration, you might need only a tiny amount of one of these three snacks to help get your creativity flowing again.

Dark Chocolate

There is evidence that links dark chocolate to creativity. It has the perfect mix of caffeine, protein, fat, carbs, and fiber to help improve your creativity. The caffeine wakes the brain up, so it starts thinking, and the nutrients help open your blood vessels, which makes it easier for you to think creatively.

It also has serotonin and endorphins, so to increase your creativity and improve your mood, eat some chocolate.

Ice Cream

There’s not a lot of scientific evidence linking ice cream to improved creativity, but ice cream has been proven to affect your brain positively. Ice cream is comfort food for many people; comfort foods always make us feel better. So if you’re feeling discouraged because you’re in a creative rut, eat a bowl of ice cream.

Beer

This sounds counterintuitive because the alcohol in beer makes you less focused. However, when you’re having a hard time coming up with an idea, the effects of beer will make you less worried about the world around you. This could help you think deeper and come up with better ideas.

Foods for Inspiration

Writers need inspiration. It keeps us going when we don’t want to create anymore, and helps us develop new ideas along the way.

Your Guilty Pleasure

The best food or drink for inspiration is your guilty pleasure. It could be one of the foods on this list or something else, like a greasy cheeseburger or a slice of pizza.

Why does eating your favorite food work? Inspiration comes from something you love and believe in. When you reward yourself every so often with your favorite guilty pleasure, you’ll feel more inspired to create great content.

Conclusion

These are the best foods and drinks for writers. Some of these should be eaten in moderation, such as dark chocolate, ice cream, and beer, but others can be eaten in larger amounts.

When deciding which foods to include in your diet, consider what you like and don’t like, and any foods you might be allergic to. If you don’t like coffee, like me, you can always drink herbal tea and get many of the same benefits coffee provides. If you know you’re allergic to chocolate, eat a bowl of ice cream for inspiration. No matter what you choose, you’ll improve your productivity, creativity, and inspiration along the way.
