Marijuana and the Mamas: Pro-Tips for Pregnant and New Moms

By Sophie Dila

This one goes out to all the expecting and new moms! With more and more states legalizing marijuana use, it’s time to get talking more about the sexual and reproductive health aspects of weed.

For those who are partaking, we have some friendly Beforeplay.org advice for you. As a reminder – despite the rumors – pot isn’t a birth control method. And given that it can change your mental state a bit, making sure your partner wants to get sexual with you is essential.

For the want-to-be-pregnant-soon, pregnant and new mamas in the house, here’s food for thought so that you can make the healthiest choices for you and your baby.

Simply put, there is no safe way to use marijuana during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Regardless of the amount or how it’s used (smoked, edibles, oils, etc.), THC – that psychoactive chemical that makes you feel high – will be passed to your baby and can cause long-term learning disabilities in your child. Even second-hand smoke has cancer-causing chemicals. Also, some hospitals test newborn babies for THC, and if the baby tests positive, the hospital is required by law to notify child protective services. So do your best to avoid weed altogether during this stage of you and your child’s life.

More questions or need help quitting? Because pot is legal in Colorado, its health department has a new campaign about marijuana and new moms with great resources, no matter where you live. Or maybe it’s a good time to make an appointment with a knowledgeable health professional – find one near you here.

Through conversations with your partner and health care providers, you can get your questions answered and connect with treatments that are confidential and judgment-free.

All we care about is that you and your future or existing baby stay safe and enjoy the healthiest experience possible. Just Talk About It.
